Power Running Game Vital in Conference Championships

The success of the New England Patriots, and the Seattle Seahawks this weekend relied heavily on the power running game of Marshawn Lynch and LeGarrette Blount. The relentless, punishing attack aided the Seahawk’s struggling passing game, and seemed to make Tom Brady’s life much easier in the rain and wind during Sunday’s matchups.

Bleacherreport.com has a great article that helps explain the power running game. It’s worth a read for sure. Keep in mind, the recent success and rebirth of the running game has nothing to do with formations, or blocking scheme innovations. Lombardi called it the Power Sweep, with pulling guards and blocking assignments that changed depending on the defenses reaction. They call that “Zone Blocking” now. This is nothing new, Zonk agrees.

They’re the same exact plays Shula used.  The defense might line up differently and the play names have changed but the approach is exactly the same….nothings changed.
